SPIRIT & GRANDEUR
Metro Concert Series # 4
We are thrilled to welcome maesto Susan Collins to the podium for her first appearance with BPO as we perform Rimsky-Korsakov’s dazzling Capriccio Espagnol, inspired by the rich colours and variety of Spanish folk music.
Growing up in Missouri USA, harpist Emily Granger has performed as Principal Harpist in some of the finest orchestras across the world including the Chicago Symphony, Sydney Symphony, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Orchestra Victoria and Opera Australia. Now calling Australia home, Emily will perform Debussy’s colourful chamber work for harp and strings, Danse Sacrée et Profane.
We conclude our 2022 seasons with Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 5 in B-flat major. Prokofiev described his fifth symphony as “glorifying the human spirit … praising the free and happy man – his strength, his generosity, and the purity of his soul.” As the longest and the most epic in its conception among Prokofiev’s symphonies, the Fifth’s emotional content runs the gamut from majestic to whimsical, from graceful to turbulent, and from humorous to self-mocking.
