Featured performer for Ensemble Q:

Program
Maurice Ravel Le Tombeau de Couperin arr Paul Dean
George Crumb Black Angels
André Caplet Conte Fantastique (after “The Masque of Red Death”)
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky Symphony No 6 “Adagio Lamentoso” arr Trish Dean

Black Angels and Red Death presents a captivating collection of works that explore themes of remembrance, conflict, fantasy, and deep introspection. Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin pays tribute to the elegance of Baroque music while mourning friends lost in World War I, reimagined here with Paul Dean’s arrangement that highlights its delicate charm. George Crumb’s Black Angels plunges us into a haunting soundscape filled with eerie,
amplified strings and unconventional techniques, reflecting the turmoil of the Vietnam War era. Caplet’s Conte Fantastique, inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s The Masque of the Red Death, evokes a chilling narrative of
inevitability through its lush, atmospheric writing for harp and strings. The program culminates with Tchaikovsky’s heart-wrenching Adagio Lamentoso
from his final symphony, presented in Trish Dean’s intimate arrangement that captures the movement’s profound melancholy and farewell to life.
Each piece offers a unique window into the composers’ worlds, filled with emotion, reflection, and storytelling.
Led by the esteemed guest violinist, Zöe Black and featuring Ensemble Q’s Emily Granger on harp.

MY FATHERLAND
Metro Series Concert #2

Ma Vlast (My Fatherland) and Sibelius’s Second Symphony come together as a celebration of far-off lands.

Opening with the harpsong of the mythic bard Lumír, Prague’s castle, Vysehrad, looks down on the river Vltava (or Moldau) in Smetana’s ode to his native land of Bohemia. Soloist Emily Granger then takes centre stage for the elegant and refined Morceau de Concert by Saint-Saens, in which the harp luxuriates in true French style.

Sibelius’s achingly beautiful Symphony No. 2 is, in his own words, a “confession of the soul”. The work opens with a simple three-note motif, and ends with a power and majesty that has grown from the roots of what came before.

SUNDAY 6 JULY, 3PM
OLD MUSEUM CONCERT HALL, BOWEN HILLS

Conductor: Steven Moore
Harp Soloist: Emily Granger

PROGRAM:

Bedrich Smetana | Vysehrad and Moldau from Ma Vlast
Camille Saint-Saens | Morceau de Concert
Jean Sibelius | Symphony No. 2 in D Major

Symphony Fantastic | QSO

Performing as Principal Harp for Queensland Symphony Orchestra:

Death has never sounded more alive than in Saint-Saëns’ Danse Macabre, where a violin charms skeletons from their graves so they can dance until the break of dawn. Then, allow yourself to be lured to the depths of a crazed composer’s mind in Symphonie Fantastique. Our Chief Conductor Umberto Clerici will energise the orchestra with Berlioz’s evocative cocktail of opium and desire and actor Eugene Gilfedder will set a nightmarish scene. Between these killer works you’ll hear Ravel’s Tzigane, rapsodie de concert, as Hungarian violinist József Lendvay will hold you in the clutches of this spellbinding solo infused with a gypsy spirit.
