November 10, 2015Sydney Opera House Debut REVIEW! 4/5 Stars"Virtuosic and versatile, an evening showing off the neglected riches of the recorder and the harp."

"Granger and Crossley should of course be commended for their musical skill and technical prowess, after a concert of largely faultless, well-executed playing, but for constructing an evening of such bold, uncompromising, pioneering music they deserve a standing ovation. Trailblazers, while not always popular, should be fearless, and this was a performance that wasn’t just brave, but also brilliant."

October 3, 2013Harp & Recorder CollaborationAlicia Crossley had the pleasure of meeting American harpist Emily Ann Granger when performing in Chicago in 2012. With both Alicia and Emily having an interest in contemporary music it seemed only natural that the two should join forces to create new pieces and breathe life into some old favourites. The duo will be presenting concerts for Australian audiences in 2015 which will include the premiere of new works by Tristan Coelho and Mark Oliveiro. Stay tuned for more updates about this exciting collaboration.

Limelight Magazine - American Harpist, Emily Ann Granger delivered a defiant demonstration, not just of impressive virtuosity, but of eye-opening versatility as well.

... a concert of largely faultless, well-executed playing, constructing an evening of such bold, uncompromising, pioneering music...

Trailblazers, while not always popular, should be fearless, and this was a performance that wasn’t just brave, but also brilliant.

Growing up in Kansas City, Emily began playing the harp at age 11. She has performed extensively with orchestras across the globe including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Opera Australia Orchestra, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Chicago Philharmonic, National Repertory Orchestra and National Orchestral Institute.

She earned her Bachelor of Music from Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music where she studied with famed pedagogue, Susann McDonald, and her Masters of Music from the Chicago College of the Performing Arts studying with Principal Harp of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Sarah Bullen. Emily's other mentors include Naoko Yoshino, Isabelle Perrin, Patty Masri-Fletcher, Elzbieta Szmyt, Lynn Aspnes and Joan Holland.

Some of Emily's most notable performances have included recitals at the Sydney Opera House Utzon Room, Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall, Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage, Curtis Institute of Music and Lyon & Healy Hall. She has performed with renowned musicians Yo-Yo Ma, Renée Fleming, Jonas Kaufmann and Janelle Monáe. Emily served as the Principal Harp of the Chicago Civic Orchestra from 2012-2014. Her performances are often heard internationally both live and recorded on WFMT and Fine Music Radio. She is the recipient of the 2015 Farewell Trust Award, first prize winner of the CCPA Concerto Competition, and semi-finalist at the Fischoff International Chamber Music Competition.

In 2012, Emily co-founded the Chicago Harp Quartet, the leading harp ensemble in the United States. The quartet has dedicated itself to presenting innovative, charismatic and forward-thinking programs that include original transcriptions as well as new commissions from composers across the globe. They will be releasing their second album later this year with original works by Alfredo Rolando Ortiz, Bruce Broughton and Paul Patterson.

As an educator, Emily has served on faculty at VanderCook College of Music, British School of Chicago, and Chicago Harp Ensemble. She has taught at the Interlochen Center for the Arts and presented masterclasses and educational residencies at Indiana University, New York University, Play on Philly!, Vanderbilt University and American Harp Society National Conference with the Chicago Harp Quartet. The quartet will travel to Havana, Cuba June, 2017, for a week long cultural ambassadorship.

As an avid hiker and aspiring mountaineer, Granger successfully walked the Te Araroa - a 3,007 kilometer trail across New Zealand taking her 138 days to complete the journey from Cape Reinga to Bluff. This past year she completed a through hike of California's John Muir Trail (400kms), climbed 14 of Colorado's highest mountains in one week and Australia's 15 highest mountains.

Emily currently resides in Sydney, Australia.

Megan Washington and Sydney Symphony Orchestra
Sydney Opera House
Two-time ARIA Award winner and multi-platinum album selling artist Megan Washington burst onto the Australian music scene in 2008.

She started out performing jazz but her style has continued to evolve to indie pop and alternative rock. Her most recent Sydney Opera House concert was sold out - with a standing ovation that brought the audience - and Washington - to tears! In 2017 she joins the SSO with new songs and a selection of favourites from her three studio albums. Don't miss one of the defining Australian female singers of our age in this special collaboration.

Rachmaninoff on Fire
Sydney Symphony Orchestra
SSO Artist in Residence Brett Dean conducts music of his own and Rachmaninoff's Third Piano Concerto with fellow Australian Piers Lane as soloist.

This year we've been performing all the Rachmaninoff piano concertos and the cycle comes to a conclusion with his Third Concerto, well known from the film Shine. It begins with disarming simplicity – an elegant melody in the piano – but it's not long before all hell breaks loose in this virtuoso tour de force. Impressive! The first half of the concert takes death and rejuvenation as its cue. The delicate, fragile sounds of the Scene with Cranes come from music that Sibelius wrote for the play Kuolema (Death). And Brett Dean conducts his own Fire Music – a heartfelt response to the Black Saturday bushfires of 2009. This piece captures in music the intense heat and destructive force of the fires, as well as the almost-miraculous rebirth of the landscape in the aftermath.

Belsazzar's Feast, Sydney Symphony Orchestra
Sydney Opera House
Experience the decadent grandeur of Walton's Belshazzar's Feast and the humour and drama of a new secular oratorio in this choral-orchestral spectacular.

The writing's on the wall for Belshazzar in Walton's monumental choral-symphony. The Old Testament story calls for music of 'savage splendour', as ferocious and indulgent as the king himself, and Belshazzar's Feast is easily the most sensational music for choir and orchestra ever written. For Hungarian Peter Eötvös, composing means enchanting his audience through sound, and his new oratorio (co-commissioned by the SSO and recently premiered in Salzburg) does exactly that. His chorus sings 'Hallelujas' quoted from different periods in music. His protagonist, the tenor, delivers prophecies with a stammer (the subtitle is literally 'Stammering Oratorio'). The secular text is a serious commentary on the world today – 'We put up fences everywhere...' – and yet the music is infused with humour. We can't wait to introduce this new work to Australian audiences!
